TURFGRASS MANAGEMENT

1.    Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to equip participants with the skills necessary for the construction and maintenance of natural turf surfaces for sporting facilities.

2.    Who should attend
Persons in the turfgrass industry and involved in the management, construction and maintenance of sports turf.

3.    Course Outline
This course will cover all pertinent aspects of the turfgrass industry in South Africa. Emphasis will be on the practical nature of the industry, though a strong theoretical base will also be laid. The course is divided into the following three one-week modules:
Module 1: 5 - 9 June

  • Orientation and introduction
  • Turfgrass physiology and morphology
  • Turfgrass identification and propagation
  • Fertilisation
  • Drainage of turf areas
  • Soil science for turf culture
  • Irrigation

    Module 2: 24 - 28 July
  • Examination of module 1
  • Supplementary cultural practices
  • Mowing
  • Turfgrass machinery
  • Organisation and administration

    Module 3: 14 - 18 August
  • Examination of module 2
  • Weed control
  • Pest control
  • Design of golf courses
  • Surveying and leveling
  • Construction of golf course turf areas
  • Construction and maintenance of turf cricket pitches
  • Construction and maintenance of bowling greens
  • Disease control

    Examination of module 3 and practical examination
  • 4.    Assessment and certification
    Each module will be separately assessed. This will take the form of both a written and practical examination. A Certificate in Turfgrass Management will be awarded to participants achieving a pass mark an average of 50% for the course (both theory exam and practical exam must be passed).


    5.    Admission requirments
    Preference will be given to applicants currently employed in the turfgrass industry.

    8.    Dates and times
    Enrolment: Personal enrolment will take place on 4th & 5th May 2010 between 08:30 and 15:30 at Room 3.16, Engineering Building, Tennant Street, Cape Town Campus.
    Commencement: Dates: The course will be presented in three one-week sessions: Week 1: 7 – 11 June, Week 2: 19 – 23 July Week 3: 16 – 20 August

    9.    Course Fee
    R5 000 per person payable in full on enrolment. The fee is inclusive of notes, instruction material, prescribed textbook and teas. It excludes the cost of accommodation and travel, which must be separately arranged by participants. A cafeteria is available on campus for lunches and light refreshments.
